The Clash of Civilisations…Pt 1
‘The Clash of Civilizations And the Remaking of World Order’ by Samuel P. Huntington
“One of the most important books to have emerged since the end of the cold war” Henry Kissinger
Samuel P. Huntington discusses in this book how the world has changed after the end of the Cold War. Where before the distinctions among peoples were idealogical, political and economic, in the post Cold-war era the distinction is cultural. For nearly half a century global politics was bi-polar - the democratic Western societies led by the US versus the Communist societies led by the Soviet Union. It was a simple system of ‘Western values under threat from Communism’.
However, Huntington argues, today global politics is multi-polar and multi-civilisational. No longer are the distinctions clear and people are increasingly attempting to find their identity, based on ancestry, religion, history and cultural groups.
I’ve only just started this book so expect more on it in future posts.
